No Love No Death

1997 (Novel)

"Her mother once told Simden every marriage ends with murder. Death for the woman. Such words were both the strange and strangely logical coming from someone who’s had countless love affairs and three husbands. But Simden had always chosen to believe that there were other ties than love, that love and fidelity were more enduring and reliable. She’d was desperate to believe, even in the worst of times."

Sara and Simden are two diametrically opposed women; mother and daughter got to know each other rather late in life. Simden has just got divorced and is on the verge of a new life; Sara has lived her life to the full but is now on the verge of death, lonely and hopeless. No Love No Death is the story of these two women reassessing themselves and each other on the bases of existence and death, and their struggle to understand the love-hate/mother-daughter relationship. Their inability to express their true feelings at the right time causes them much pain. This novel stands apart in the way it questions love, marriage, freedom and commitments.
