Caught red-handed stealing Engels’ typewriter, the former poet Kerim is detained in a secret centre where artists struggling to create under the art-hating regime are forced to work. He’s ordered to write a ‘harmless novel’; the intriguing characters he creates in his cell reveal the impasse of the system. The main storyline focuses on the unexpected romance between a young woman (an incest victim) raised under religious oppression and a dispossessed, vulnerable journalist.
